You’re going to make me go through this painful experience?

I assume you have found your way to this page because you wanted to know something about who is being this blog. Honestly I hate doing the whole “talking about myself” sorta thing, probably because I am just plain no good at it. Since you ask…

Loving the web…

Ah sounds cheesy doesn’t it? Feels cheesy to write also… but I guess we all need something we love to do and the web is mine. With a lifetime of fine arts, a love for technology and higher education in social sciences I have found myself somewhere between a graphic designer, UX practitioner and web developer. I accept that it makes me a jack of all trades but master of none, but cherish that it gives me a holistic view of the web.

I often feel like the kid who can’t wait to remind the teacher to assign homework before the class ends, but if you can make a living doing what you like why question it eh?

So what are your qualifications you no good son of a bitch?

Woah, calm down there. If I were to brag about myself I would ramble about co-founding Refresh Detroit, co-hosting WebAxe, and generally stating that I am sweet and that is qualification enough. In the past few years I started teaching at Washtenaw Community College,, I am currently authoring a design book titled “The Six Layers of Design,” and I have been running a web design company for about 6 years now.

Is this worth reading?

That is for you to judge. There are those who will find meaning and value in my posts and others who would rather read content that is formatted in lists. Both have their time and place. I tend to write about what challenges, thoughts and solutions I come across in working on the web. My team members at company partners (like fellow Ann Arbor Web Designer, Lyndsay Babl) will sometimes publish information targeted at clients and website owners.

If you enjoy it great, if not I am sure your type of content is out there somewhere.

Cheers

  1. Thanks for the post Alex. I really like your site, both in the design and the content. It is very well written and gives a good sense of the creativity/funky-ness of your company.

    Thanks for the comment!

  2. Hey,

Thank you for your website and all of the wonderful content you make available to the development community. I find your site extremely useful and think that your efforts are noble.

    Kindest regards,

    –Michael

  3. Just a personal observance here, but on the about me page don’t you think it would be a good idea to refer to yourself in something other than first person “I” at least once. Going to your business domain I see your real name in the footer, but that’s having to dig pretty deep to know a little bit more about who the hell is “I”.
Hope I’m not blowing your alter ego status all to hell, lol.

  4. I love your the look of your blog! Clean and uncluttered! Very easy on the eyes! Enjoy reading your articles too… Thanks for sharing!

  5. Hi,

Beautiful blog and good CSS information sharing. I just bought my domain and learning CSS to build my website. Your website is one of my reference. Thanks…

    Warm Regards,
    Edwin

  6. Hi Ross!

I’m not sure I ended up on your site (a link to your article on “8 fonts you probably don’t use in css, but should” caught my eye – but not sure what brought me there!).

I found myself bookmarking the first 7 articles listed in your RSS feed to read later (supposed to be focused on a project or two!). Before I look at the 8th, wanted to leave a quick note to say “hi”, since I have a feeling I’ll be spending a bit of time on your site 🙂

I love your site’s design, by the way. Clean and striking are the two adjectives that first pop into my head.

Looking forward to reading your blog!

    Best wishes,
    Faryl

  7. Thanks Faryl, glad you are finding the site and content useful. Make sure to post comments on blog posts, I would love to hear your feedback on the various topics.

  8. Had to leave a comment.

The new blue was quite a stark contrast to your previous red when I opened your blog for my usual read. I really like it. Softer on the eyes, yet retaining that contrast and sleekness of the previous colour. Red is my favourite colour, yet somehow, this looks so much better.

Nice change. And apparently, a change is as good as a holiday. Now if only i could change my useless posting habits…

  9. Thanks so much Tosh, glad you like the change.

I originally did it as we are reworking our corporate identity a tad and moving from a red and blue color scheme to focusing more on just owning this shade of blue. I felt the blog should be consistent, and was surprised at how much I liked it after I threw it all together.

And to twist an old saying, “There are no useless posts” 😉

  10. I helped my dad start his own blog and internet market his blog, since he’s retired and don’t have many things for his past time. He sometimes enjoys the work but most of time he feels like a burden since he does not know much about IT.

  11. I’ve been reading your blog at least for a year and just realized your office is two blocks up from my office. My office is on first street. If I knew where you were located (and the plottings going on at the office) I would have recommended your company for a few redesign initiatives going on.

As it is now, I’ve begun seeding your company’s name at the office. Hopefully I can get some business your way sometime soon. 🙂

  13. Have you thought about adding some sort of social bookmark buttons internet? At least you should add one for Digg, which is just about the most important social bookmarking sites, so we can digg you up!
